This Week in Beach Volleyball: World Championships Roll On
The good thing about the World Championships of beach volleyball is that it is one of the few non-misnomers in sport. It’s a legitimate World Championship, with teams represented from every potential spot on the map. The bad thing about the World Championships of beach volleyball is that is one of the few non-misnomers in sport, including teams from every potential spot on the map.
It’s an inclusionary event and, as such, sometimes this presents lopsided matchups. Like Kerri Walsh Jennings and Brooke Sweat, who beat a team from Mauritius, an island country east of Madagascar, 21-2, 21-2. No typo. That was the real score of a real match that occurred at the biggest event of the 2019 season.
Those matchups are, for the most part, over. Pool play concludes on Tuesday, and after that, the field will be whittled to the world’s elite, and the elimination rounds will begin for title of World Champ.
Here’s what’s on tap this week in beach volleyball which is, again, all international, as the AVP still has nearly a month before Hermosa:
FIVB Beach Volleyball: World Championships
July 1-7: Hamburg, Germany
- The same teams are still competing and, depending on how Emily Stockman and Kelley Larsen and Billy Allen and Stafford Slick’s pools shake out, every American team could make it through pool and onto the elimination rounds this week.
July 4-7: Qidong 2-Star
- Who’s competing: Irene Pollock, Terese Cannon
