Beach Bums to host NYE tournament

Tampa Bay Beach Bums to host New Year’s tournament, Beach Bums Bowl

The beach volleyball world predictably – and understandably – shook last week when news dropped that the premiere international tournament in the U.S., the Fort Lauderdale Major, was wiped off the schedule.

And then it shook again when the FIVB removed three more stateside events, in Texas, Florida and Los Angeles, whittling the United States’ tally of four Olympic qualification tournaments to zero in a matter of just a few days.

There are, however, still grassroots options on the East and Gulf Coast in the winter and early spring months for players seeking competitive volleyball with a good chunk of prize money. Are they top-flight FIVBs? Of course not, but Tampa Bay Beach Bums, which held two p1440 satellite qualifiers in 2018, will still be offering tournaments with an international field.

Last year alone, tournaments featured decorated and accomplished players such as Ricardo Santos, Alvaro Filho, Rafu Rodriguez, Piotr Marciniak, Josh Binstock, Dave McKienzie, Dave Palm and Eric Zaun, among others.

This year should prove no different, with Beach Bums launching its 2019 season early with the Beach Bums Bowl in Treasure Island, Florida on December 29 and stretching into the new year.

It’s similar in structure to some of the other bigger independent tournaments throughout the year – think Seaside, Motherlode, FUDs – in that it offers whatever style or level of play one would ask for. There is a blind draw co-ed tournament, a normal coed tournament, a standard doubles tournament and a fours tournament, all with levels ranging from BB to Open.

And, of course, as it’s ringing in the New Year, there is a party to be had, the Beach Bums third annual New Years Eve Masquerade Bash.

If anything, the event will provide a bit of merriment to those feeling down about the prospects of beach volleyball in the U.S.

Said Dominic Nelson, the founder and directing manager of Beach Bums, “We are really excited for this next weekend and everything coming in 2019. We are focused on creative, fun, competitive tournaments and unique events throughout Florida.”
