Second p1440 Intrasquad Match Play to Feature Japanese National Team
There are some unfamiliar names on the bracket for Friday’s second p1440 Intrasquad Match Play Tournament. While the women’s bracket features nine teams recognizable to most who have followed qualifiers and main draws for the past year, the men’s side, at seed No. 4, shows Yu Koshikawa and Junki Hatabe.
They’re a Japanese pair, in town for Southern California training, what is typically a sunny escape from Japan though hasn’t really lived up to its billing this winter. This is part of p1440’s mission: to develop beach volleyball, not just on American soil, but elsewhere. And anyway, by inviting the Japanese National Team to the Intrasquad tournament, the American teams, who wouldn’t otherwise be competing against foreign national pairs, benefit. A win-win, in every sense of the word.
As far as the winning goes, a new team will take home the title on Friday. Last month’s winners, Madison Willis and McKenna Thibodeau and Myles Muagututia and Travis Mewhirter, have both split temporarily, Willis-Thibodeau due to a lung injury to Willis and Muagututia-Mewhirter for Muagututia’s wedding this Saturday.
Thibodeau picked up Delaney Knudsen, who competed with Jade Hayes, while Mewhirter paired up with Kacey Losik, whose usual partner, Logan Webber, is out of town.
The women’s competition will begin at 8 a.m., while the men’s will begin at 9. Aside from thunder and lightning or torrential downpour, the tournament will go on as scheduled.
