p1440 to Stream No. 1 UCLA vs. No. 2 Pepperdine on Wednesday

Brook Bauer-Heidi Dyer-Pepperdine Beach Volleyball-UCLA Beach Volleyball

There is no rest for the powers in college beach volleyball, and especially so for the programs on the West Coast. It makes it impossible to peg what might be the match of the year, given that there is one potential National Championship-caliber matchup every week, if not multiple times per week.

Yet we’d be remiss, at p1440, to miss Wednesday’s clash between UCLA, the 2018 National Champion and current No. 1 ranked team in the country, and Pepperdine, the 2017 National Runners-up sitting No. 2 in 2019.

Which is exactly why we’ll be streaming Wednesday’s noon matchup at Zuma Beach in Malibu on p1440’s app and website.

Their first meeting, in Hawai’i for the season-opening Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic, was thrilling enough. Though the score showed 4-1 in UCLA’s favor it was, as beach scores can go, much closer than it indicates.

UCLA’s Nicole and Megan McNamara put on one of the most exciting matches of the year against Pepperdine’s Brook Bauer and Heidi Dyer. A rematch, if coaches Stein Metzger of UCLA and Marcio Sicoli of Pepperdine keep their lineup orders the same, should be a fun one.

On court two will be UCLA’s Sarah Sponcil and Lily Justine, a jump-setting, slide-running team who remains undefeated, having won its past eight sets by a combined 75 points.

Where the remainder of the matchups and pairings will fall is part of the mystery of it. Both the Waves and Bruins have toggled with a number of lineups this year, either out of necessity – illness, injury, partnership experiments – or simply resting legs that are already nine matches deep.

So catch the clash of No. 1 vs. No. 2 here on p1440’s website or its app, where we will be streaming all six matches – courts one through five and the exhibition – from noon to 2:30.
