SAN DIEGO – Today, three-time Olympic gold medalist, Kerri Walsh Jennings’ p1440, the digital platform that’s redefining the sport of beach volleyball, announced its 2019 Developmental Program, an unprecedented initiative to support the game’s rising talent. Seventy aspiring players, including up-and-coming pro players, as well as athletes between their college and professional careers, were selected for the 2019 summer program. Each athlete in the Developmental Program receives world-class coaching from renowned professionals, including Walsh Jennings’ longtime coach Marcio Sicoli; Olympic-level training through p1440’s partner OC Fast Twitch; and recovery services from p1440’s official physical therapy partner, Evolution Physical Therapy. The Southern California based program also provides the players with multiple intra-squad tournaments, $85,000 worth of performance bonuses, p1440 gear and more — all at no cost to the athletes.

“From the very beginning, we wanted p1440 to have a major focus on developing future professional athletes and give them a place to call home when they come out of college,” said Walsh Jennings, co-founder of p1440. “Our Developmental Program is unlike anything else in our sport and provides everything aspiring athletes need to develop their skills—training with the same trainers I’ve worked with for decades, increased opportunities to compete and earn prize money in our intra-squad tournaments, recovery and injury prevention from the best in the business and the supportive environment of a community of like-minded people who are all dedicated to growing the game. I could only have dreamed about something like this when I was a young athlete.”

The p1440 Developmental Program has two seasons per year—spring and summer. Open tryouts are held for each season and the p1440 coaching squad selects the final group of athletes. The p1440 Developmental Program is for both men and women and has two levels—elite and development. Athletes can move up or down the levels based on their performance. Players are ranked and earn points through their attendance at practices and through a variety of competitions, including p1440’s intra-squad, CBVA and AVP tournaments.

All athletes who earn a spot in the Developmental Program receive:

  • Coaching with Olympic-level coaches, one to three times a week for 30 weeks
  • Strength and conditioning training twice a week with Walsh Jennings’ personal training team at OC Fast Twitch
  • Injury evaluation with a licensed professional at p1440’s exclusive physical therapy partner, Evolution Physical Therapy
  • Access to dedicated Evolution Physical Therapy recovery zone at intra-squad tournaments
  • Access to dedicated recovery zone at Evolution Physical Therapy’s South Bay and Costa Mesa locations
  • Five intra-squad tournaments to compete in
  • Live-streaming of intra-squad tournaments on p1440.com
  • p1440 branded apparel
  • p1440 sponsorship partner products
  • Registration to two CBVA tournaments

p1440 also provides financial incentives, giving athletes the opportunity to win performance bonuses based off their individual performances. The top ranked athletes are rewarded at the end of each season. The 2019 Developmental Program has a total of $85,000 in available performance bonuses. That total is split between summer and spring season—with $50,000 available for the summer season and $35,000 for the spring season. Each season’s performance bonus is split evenly between the men’s and women’s teams. The performance bonuses are awarded on an individual basis and the top ten athletes from each season, male and female, receive a bonus.

This year’s summer season includes eight women’s and four men’s teams at the elite level and 11 women’s and 12 men’s teams at the development level. The summer program begins at the end of May and continues through the beginning of October, with performance bonuses being provided to individuals at the end of September.
