Witt Sisters win opening Dev Tournament

Mewhirter-Muagututia, Thibodeau-Willis win inaugural Dev Program tournament

One of the primary focuses of p1440 is the development of players in the United States, from the grassroots to the up-and-comers to the already-elite making the Olympic push, such as Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil. The spring p1440 Developmental Program features 20 teams — 13 women, 7 men — selected from an open tryout in December and led by Pepperdine coach Marcio Sicoli and a staff of decorated and venerated coaches.

A feature of the Developmental Program, with training sites in Huntington Beach and Hermosa Beach, is a monthly intra-squad tournament, where teams will compete for position as the top-ranked Developmental Team.

Friday, January 25, marked the first such tournament, with 10 women’s teams and all 7 men’s teams competing.

On the women’s side, Madison Willis and McKenna Thibodeau beat Avery Bush and Traci Callahan to claim the inaugural title.

For the men, Travis Mewhirter and Stanford alum Myles Muagututia topped Hagen Smith and Steve Irvin in a rematch from the quarterfinals of p1440 Huntington Beach a little more than a month ago.

The men’s matches were streamed on the p1440 Facebook page, which you can find below.

The next Developmental Program tournament is scheduled for Friday, February 15, at the Huntington Beach Pier beginning at 8 a.m. You can watch in person, or stream on our Facebook page or on our website and app!
