It’s becoming quite routine these days. Not that it’s fun. Not that Kerri Walsh Jennings really enjoys the pressures of an off-site country quota followed by an off-site qualifier — both of which are single elimination — but her and Brooke Sweat are cruising through such crucibles.
Last week, Walsh Jennings and Sweat won a single-elimination country quota to earn a spot in a four-star qualifier in Jinjiang, China. Yesterday, they did the same for a four-star in Itapema, Brazil, beating the new and promising team of Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil, 21-14, 21-12, to earn a spot in Wednesday’s qualifier. And, on Wednesday morning, they beat Colombians Claudia and Angela Galindo, 21-10, 21-18 to qualify for main draw in Brazil.
Likewise, fellow Americans Carly Wopat and Brittany Hochevar qualified after earning the qualifier wild card, beating Japan 15-10 in the third set, making it out of an international qualifier for the first time in their nascent partnership.
Main draw will begin with, as always, modified pool play followed by single elimination bracket play.
