Karelov, Deturk Win Four Matches en Route to Intrasquad Title
Yu Koshikawa and Junki Hatabe have been in Southern California for a little over two weeks. And though the trip was intended as a beach volleyball training camp of sorts, they really haven’t been able to play all that much beach volleyball. It’s been cold. Rainy. Not all that much warmer of more pleasant than their native Japan.
And then Friday rolled around, and alas Southern California looked a bit more like Southern California – sunny, lovely temperature, sublime beach volleyball weather. The No. 4 seed in the men’s p1440 Developmental Program Instrasquad Tournament on Friday, they were upset by No. 5 Tomas Salava and Martin Mach in the first round, though at this point in their trip, a loss didn’t dampen their spirits any more than the previous few weeks of rain could have. They were just happy to play.
“So happy to still be here,” Koshikawa said Friday morning. Their objective is the same as any other team’s at this point in the season, or pre-season, whichever you’d like to define mid-February as on the beach volleyball calendar: to prepare and develop. And that is the main objective of the p1440 Developmental Program: to prepare and develop up-and-coming talent for the approaching season, which, for some, begins next week in Cambodia.
Though Sasha Karelov and Lauren Deturk will not be joining the four American teams traveling to the FIVB two-star in Cambodia next week, their improvements have been tangible, as evidenced by their win in the Developmental Tournament on Friday.
They had the longest road of anyone, winning four matches, upsetting the one seed (Jade Hayes and Kirsten Overton), the four seed (Tani Stephens and Tina Toghiyani) and the two seed (Delaney Knudsen and McKenna Thibodeau) en route to their first win in the series.
The men’s winners, Kacey Losik and Travis Mewhirter, had no such long road. Recipients of a first-round bye, they needed only two wins, over John Schwengel and Aidan Brown and Chris Austin and Kris Johnson to claim the win.
The next Developmental Program Instrasquad Tournament will be held on March 8 at the Huntington Beach Pier.
