If he’s being entirely honest, Tim Bomgren wasn’t entirely sure anybody in the beach volleyball world knew he existed from September through April. That time of year when, typically, major domestic tournaments come to a halt, and he retreats to his home state of Minnesota, gets back to his routine at Anytime Fitness, works his full-time job, takes care of his duties as a father and husband and is basically everything that makes him one of the most lovable people in beach volleyball.

So it may come as something of a surprise to see the Minnesotan’s name on the list of entrants for p1440’s Top Guns, which begins on Friday in a round-robin style format featuring four pools of four where everyone will play everyone in their respective pools. The top two finishers in the 16-player field will draft their teammate for the finals to establish beach volleyball’s Top Guns.

Who knows? Maybe a southpaw from Woodbury, Minnesota, whose highest level of indoor volleyball was club at a small Division II school in Wisconsin, could stake his claim as one of beach volleyball’s Top Guns.

“I’m extremely excited to get out and play again even though I thought off season was in full force,” Bomgren said. “I can assure you that any Minnesotan is looking to head out to California this time of year, so to get an opportunity to play some volleyball against some of the top players from around the world will be really fun.”

One of the most fun aspects of round-robin style tournaments is that partners not only get to play against their current partners, as Billy Kolinske and Miles Evans will do, but also against former partners. Bomgren could be matched up both with and against Taylor Crabb, with whom he took second in AVP Austin, as well as Chaim Schalk, with whom he played the final five events of the AVP season, culminating in a second in Chicago.

“To me, this basically feels like one of the first tournaments of the year where I haven’t had much practice recently but that allows me to be a little more mentally focused than during the busy and hectic summer months,” Bomgren said. “I love playing KOBs and I think having the ability to block and play defense might bode well for me in this format.”
