Austin-Schultz compete for gold

Film Room Friday: Dev Team Austin-Schultz Competing For Gold at FIVB Cook Islands

On Thursday afternoon, our Developmental Program hosted an intrasquad tournament, the third of the fall/winter session. That was held just down the road at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach. But a week before?

Chris Austin and Earl Schultz were competing far from any Southern California beach. Instead, they traveled across the Pacific, taking a nine-hour flight to a little known map dot — or 15 map dots, to be exact — called the Cook Islands, competing in their second FIVB event of the year.

Automatically seeded into the main draw, they marched through pool play into the quarterfinals, where an 11-14 comeback in the third set paved the way to a semifinal victory and a berth into the finals, where they’d meet New Zealand’s Sam O’Dea and Griffin Muller.

The film of the finals, a fun, three-set match that required yet another late-set comeback from Austin and Schultz, is above. As for the Dev Program? It continues to roll on, with the next tournament scheduled for February 11 in Bolsa Chica.
